ThinkProgress must still be a going concern despite being up for sale and under “severe financial strain,” but they’ve got to pay writers like this one for their hot takes. We’re not ashamed to admit we cried a little reading it.
Specifically, I share a story in today's newsletter about my decision to unfriend someone I've known since high school over her decision to wear a MAGA hat. I gave her a choice, and she chose the hat over me. https://t.co/NkcdMHeHMK
— Zack Ford (@ZackFord) July 6, 2019
Sounds like she made a great choice tbh https://t.co/fVFInUzZd6
— Jessica Fletcher (@heckyessica) July 7, 2019
My final words to her were: “Every time you wear the hat, you remember you lost a friendship over it. Every time.” I know for sure I’ll now think of her every time I see a MAGA hat, and I’ll fear its corrupting power even more than I used to. https://t.co/NkcdMHeHMK
— Zack Ford (@ZackFord) July 6, 2019
FEAR THE CORRUPTING POWER OF THE MAGA HAT.
Yeah you’re the one choosing the hat over a friendship. I don’t wear them but you’re essentially saying that a MAGA hat (meaning visible support for Trump) is akin to a swastika or a Hammer-and-sickle (though the latter I suspect you’d be ok with). That’s ridiculous.

If that's the kind of friend you are, then it was an abusive relationship.

— Cam (@SlauterIsland) July 6, 2019
I’m so sorry this is happening to you.
— lankydrummerboy (@zakmuzak) July 6, 2019
Look in the mirror, guy. You made it an issue.
— Rubric Marlin (@RubricMarlin) July 7, 2019
The narcissism on display is pretty astounding.
— Josh Massey (@joshmassey1) July 7, 2019
She made the right choice

She chose an inanimate object over you. pic.twitter.com/cJmaqMLZFU

— Duh-nae! (@naenaenuss) July 7, 2019
So you wrote a story about how a girl you know made a correct decision? How nice of you.

You must be a huge zero.

— OgreUasshole (@Ogre17018798) July 7, 2019
As others said, you are the one that chose a hat to be more important than a friend. Your friend didn't lose anything important, it seems.
— OgreActive (@ActiveOgre) July 7, 2019
Judging by your miserable bio, I’d have chosen the hat too.
— William Arp Johnson (@JebArpJohnson) July 7, 2019
Your loss. Enjoy being miserable
— Frank Dinardo (@fjdinardo) July 6, 2019
Sounds like she made the right choice.
— A Wreck of a Poet (@art_bax) July 6, 2019
You're the terrible friend, not her.
— Grand Admiral Nick (@admiral_nick) July 7, 2019
It was a smart choice.
— Adam (@TeamAdam76) July 7, 2019
The hat had the decency to not force an ultimatum.
— Robert Schultz (@tugboatdaddy) July 6, 2019
This says SO much more about you than it does about her. ?♀️
— TeeJay2016 (@Jim1981T) July 6, 2019
You did her a favor.
— Joseph Vaden Shelley (@josephvaden) July 7, 2019
Anyone that would base friendship on this is the fakest, most garbage friend you could ever hope to have, so better than she learns it now I guess.
— Dan (@LawoftheGator) July 6, 2019
She didn’t choose ‘the hat’, she chose to be a free thinker, to not be controlled by what her friends/acquaintances think. Good for her.
— ??AmericanStrong (@fiscalconserve) July 7, 2019
You gave her a choice. How kind of you.
— Rolinda Day (@dayroday13) July 7, 2019
She’s better off without “friends” like you.
— B Carazzo (@BCarazzo) July 6, 2019
Sounds like she made a better choice to wear the hat than to stay friends with a person who can't accept others positions.
— Jim Gibney (@Gibney_Jim) July 7, 2019
"Everything you stand for or me, who hates everything you stand for" must have been the easiest decision of her life. pic.twitter.com/ix5eGZ9w0b

You are truly a hero. So brave.
— Dan Weinstein (@BJWeinstein) July 7, 2019
Imma be real chief. That’s a douchebag move. My best friend is a die hard liberal and we’re literally best friends. You don’t let politics do that to you.
— Alex (@EsverAlexander) July 7, 2019
Get the hell over yourself.
— Will Robertson ?? (@verno1974) July 7, 2019
Can't imagine why. Do as I say believe what I believe and wear what I approve of.
— The Norseman (@scottho03862553) July 7, 2019
I’m so lucky I don’t have any friends as awful as you. You’re a terrible friend.
— Julia Johnson (@juliaajohnson_) July 7, 2019
Chance you’ll miss the point that maybe it was your ultimatum to your friend that ended the friendship, and NOT some stupid hat? pic.twitter.com/HOajlqBHXr
— WhatMakesTheGingerSnap (@MakesSnap) July 6, 2019
She made the right call – clearly you are not well and any relationship with you would be toxic and end poorly, so good on her.
— HEN263 (@hen263) July 6, 2019
She’s better off. I’m guessing she’s put up with you a lot longer than you deserved.
— Aubrey Bear (@NotReallyABear2) July 7, 2019
Zack is a small, sad boy who can’t tolerate differing views. Poor baby. Whine!
— Chad (@Chadpantz92) July 7, 2019
Crappy writing, Zack, but amazing ratio! Truly a thing to behold.
