'He gets it': Teen Vogue writer goes all-in on Bernie Sanders for president this Earth Day

Two of our favorite things here at Twitchy are Bernie Sanders, the elderly socialist millionaire with three homes, and Teen Vogue, the magazine which offers hot takes on teen topics ranging from “How to Get Your Best Summer Vagina Ever” to “Everything You Should Know About Karl Marx” to “A Guide to Anal Sex.”

It’s not surprising that Teen Vogue would put up a piece for Earth Day, but it looks like the magazine that praised the Black Panthers for serving free breakfasts is backing Sanders all the way when it comes to tackling climate change.

Sanders, a 77-year-old man, even retweeted Teen Vogue, which is kind of funny in itself:

“He gets it,” declares climate activist and hip-hop artist Xiuhtezcatle Martinez.

My generation was born into a changing world. It’s crazy to consider the disastrous effect humans have had on the environment in just the 18 years I’ve been alive. When that realization hit me, I shifted from awareness to anger to action.

Before I was old enough to attend school, I found myself protesting, speaking, and marching for climate and environmental action. One of the things I noticed right away was that almost everywhere I went, I was the only person like me around. Not only was I the only kid, I was almost always the only indigenous or brown person at all these events.

Every part of our climate crisis, from the extraction, refining, and transport of fossil fuels to the catastrophic weather extremes smashing the globe, is disproportionately impacting poor, black, and brown communities. And somehow our perspective wasn’t being included in the mainstream environmental conversation.

Even though every senator running for president rushed to co-sponsor Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Martinez (and then voted “present” when it was brought up for a vote) argues that Sanders is the one Democratic candidate who reaches out to younger voters and really listens to what they have to say. And he’s not wrong; college kids really seem to love this guy — more than they did Hillary Clinton, who could barely make a dent in that demographic.

So he’s the guy? He gets it?

One thing we’re not seeing in the replies to Teen Vogue’s tweet: the names of any other Democratic candidates. Maybe Sanders is the only one reaching out to the 18-year-olds.

Probably … the fix is in for Joe Biden once he finally gets off his butt and into the game. It’s his turn, plus the D.C. establishment likes him.

Plus, we still can’t get over the line, “My generation was born into a changing world.” No kidding … talk to someone who was 18 back in 1942; they’ll have some stories for you.
