IMPORTANT: #NoRA celebs issue strongly worded letter condemning 'racist' BlackRock

Remember when Parkland shooting survivor and anti-NRA activist David Hogg took to Twitter to call for people to boycott investment management company BlackRock for its connection to gun manufacturers, only to be reminded by Kyle Kashuv that BlackRock owns a very sizable chunk of Twitter as well?

#NoRA, the anti-NRA initiative made up of celebrities like Alyssa Milano, Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer, Alec Baldwin, Ashley Judd, Julianne Moore, Patton Oswalt, Debra Messing and more, released its official statement on BlackRock Wednesday night, noting that BlackRock holds a 17 percent stake in Sturm, Ruger, the nation’s largest gun manufacturer.

Is this a boycott or what? And how is BlackRock racist? Well, because BlackRock, whose board consists of “exclusively white men,” invests in a gun manufacturer, and women of color, in particular, suffer most from gun violence:

Sturm, Ruger’s board includes Sandra Froman, a past president of the NRA and current NRA Board Member. Froman formerly worked to promote the views of William Shockley, a physicist who perpetuated theories that whites are genetically superior to other races.

BlackRock voted to confirm the entire board, made up of Froman, Killoy and seven other exclusively white men.

This blatant disregard for shareholder will and basic humanity is emblematic of the gun and financial industries’ combined efforts to value profit over lives.

Communities of color, especially women of color, suffer disproportionately from gun violence. The “leadership” of Sturm, Ruger and the NRA shows not only a disregard for this racist outcome, but in fact has actively promoted theories which perpetuate it.

So again, is this a boycott or not? It doesn’t look like it: #NoRA simply concludes that “the American financial industry is killing Americans. We demand better.”

Really, follow David Hogg’s lead and boycott Twitter too — please. It’s only right.

Looks like #NoRA is up to the task of writing strongly worded statements, but it doesn’t look like it’s doing much:

Oh well.

Call it the “Alyssa Milano Effect.” It works with politicians too.
