While the pundits on cable news and social media continue to argue what significance the shouting of “Allahu Akbar” might have had in connection with the New York City truck attack on Halloween, CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank is looking into the suspect’s recent past. No, not what mosques he might have attended either.
1. Saipov was arrested for traffic citation issue almost exactly year before NYC attack and planned attack for a year. The trigger?

Well, the part about the arrest is true — that’s where many news outlets grabbed Saipov’s mugshot.

2. Humiliating brushes with law enforcement may have been trigger for radicalized individuals in past cases.

3. One example was Chattanooga shooter. He arrested for DUI just weeks before his 2015 attack and had been due in court soon after attack.

5. Any humiliation that might have been felt in these cases was of course a matter of their perception. Law enforcement doing their job.

6. Fundamental driver behind all these jihadi attacks is belief that they will be rewarded in afterlife for act of "holy war."
— Paul Cruickshank (@CruickshankPaul) November 2, 2017
7. But there are triggers in many cases that push radicals from extremist thought to violent planning/action.

8. For jihadi-radicals being arrested on any grounds by what in their view are "infidel" US law enforcement gonna feel to them humiliating
— Paul Cruickshank (@CruickshankPaul) November 2, 2017
9. Humans are of course complex and complex sets of factors tend to drive actions. We still know very little about attacker's trajectory.
