Investigators to determine if police committed an offense by shooting machete-wielding man on train

An unidentified man is in the hospital after allegedly threatening passengers on a busy commuter train with a machete Monday in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Wow, a police-involved shooting … that’s horrifying news. Is the guy running around with the machete in a crowded transit station at rush hour going to be OK?

CTV News Vancouver reports that officers with the Metro Vancouver Transit Police responded after receiving reports of a man on a train who was allegedly threatening passengers with a machete.

They tracked the man to a train car and tried to hold him inside while the train and surrounding area were evacuated. The Vancouver Police Department arrived to assist and said the man broke through the closed train doors with the machete and was shot when he approached the armed officers, refusing to follow orders to drop his weapon.

CTV News adds that Marten Youssef, spokesman for British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office, said in a statement that “the IIO’s focus will be to determine if any officer committed an offence as a result of the shooting.”

The man’s identity and condition have not been released yet. If investigators commented on a possible motive (of the man with the machete, not the police), we must have missed it.
