Small child tells reporter he wants to 'smash their police cars' after officer-involved shooting in Charlotte

Hillary Clinton and the #BlackLivesMatter movement didn’t quite get along at first, but the Democratic candidate for president eventually adopted the hashtag for a handful of tweets and was endorsed on stage at the Democratic National Convention by nine “Mothers of the Movement.”

On Tuesday, Clinton’s attention and that of several other Democrats was focused on Terence Crutcher, an unarmed man who was shot and killed by police in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday. Police released video of the shooting Monday, and the Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting.

Add Republican Sen. Tim Scott to the list as well.

While political momentum gathers behind Crutcher’s death, though, another fatal police-involved shooting has taken place in Charlotte, N.C., and police in riot gear are finding themselves face-to-face with hundreds of protesters Tuesday night.

An armed suspect? This might not be a name that shows up in politicians’ tweets with a hashtag appended.

Bruno and Elsa Gillis report that an armed man exited his vehicle and then got back in. When police approached, the man got back out of the vehicle armed with a firearm. Officers then opened fire, according to police.

They add that both the police officer and the man who was shot and killed are African-American.

Only hours later, protests attracting hundreds ramped up at the scene, with demonstrators blocking the street and surrounding a police cruiser.

Things appear to be breaking up for now.

Police say one officer suffered non-life threatening injuries during the protest.
