Starting January 2013, all Privately Owned Weapons (POW) must be registered through the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES). IAW Army Regulation 190-11, Physical Security of Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives (RAR 28 June 2011) this includes firearms belonging to personnel residing off post who transport firearms onto the installation for the purpose of hunting or marksmanship shooting.

As a reminder, individuals must declare firearms at the Gate upon entry and have the registration document whenever the firearm is transported on the installation. They must present the registration permit to range/hunt control officials prior to conducting activities utilizing the firearm.

Twitchy will update this post as details become available.

Update:

The lockdown has been lifted, according to several Twitter users and at least one media outlet.

Update:

Reuters is reporting that at least one person, a civilian, was injured.

NBC News, citing unnamed military officials, reported on its website that a wounded civilian was flown to a hospital. There was no immediate word on that person’s condition.

Police in surrounding jurisdictions have been asked by Fort Knox officials to be on the lookout for a tall black man driving a medium-sized, four-door brown car with tinted windows who may have driven off the base, said Bryce Shumate, spokesman for the police department in nearby Radcliff.

Update:

A Fort Knox news release confirmed that one U.S. Army Human Resources Command civilian employee is dead.
