Various groups opposed to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime today announced the formation of a coalition called the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces. Islamic preacher Maath al-Khatib was elected president of the new coalition, while Riad Seif and Suheir Atassi will serve as vice presidents.

Assad’s opponents hope that presenting a single, unified face to the international community will assist with relief efforts.
The move comes on the heels of Syrian mortar strikes on Israel, and a return of fire by Israel. Israeli TV reports that Qatar and Turkey have recognized the new opposition group as the sole representative of the Syrian people.
