We’re old enough to remember when mobs would form around the lone person in the grocery store who had dared go out without a mask on. Masks were mandated for 2-year-olds. And then Dr. Leana Wen on CNN in December 2021 that cloth masks were “little more than facial decoration.” She walked that back a bit, saying what she meant is that people should be wearing three-ply surgical masks. Then, in August 2022, Wen described her personal 180 on masking her own young children at school.
Forget about Wen and forget about 2022. Now we’re facing a new variant that’s compelled President Joe Biden to enact one of those “hysterically xenophobic” travel restrictions from China. And Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel tells NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell that his only advice to Americans is to wear a mask — a “really high quality” N95 mask.
