NYT: Residents of the Bahamas say Sam Bankman-Fried's alleged crimes were 'hardly comparable' to gang violence

Crypto-fraudster, FTX founder, and Democrat mega-donor Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas just a day before he was supposed to appear before the House Financial Services Committee, led by Rep. Maxine Waters, who’d blown him a kiss at an earlier hearing. Before his arrest, Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos had interviewed Bankman-Fried to find out what had gone wrong with his company. But not long after, Bankman-Fried was awaiting extradition in a jail in the Bahamas that was described as “not fit for humanity.”

The New York Times is still on top of the story and sent reporters to interview citizens of the Bahamas about Bankman-Fried, and what they learned was that they were more concerned with gang violence on the island.

You can't tell from the piece, but crime in the Bahamas fell 13% in 2021 and has steadily declined for the last several years. (14 grafs in the author vaguely gestures to this). And still, these descriptions of non-white regions as apocalyptic by default aren't going anywhere.
