House Republicans release their own report on security failures at the Capitol on January 6

One of the big news stories of the week was the January 6 select committee holding its final hearing and referring Donald Trump to the Justice Department for federal prosecution. We’d known since back in November that the committee’s final report was going to focus on Trump. NBC News reported that “committee staffers were informed via a phone call that material prepared by several of the teams whose work did not directly link to Trump would largely not be included in the final report, according to the three sources. One source said a ‘pens down’ order came after the call.” In other words, staffers tasked with looking into security and law enforcement failures were told their contributions weren’t needed.

That hasn’t stopped five House Republicans from issuing their own report on security failures. How, after all, was it possible for rioters to force their way into Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office, leading her to hide in the bathroom? (Oh, that’s right, that never happened.) OK, what about the video we’ve seen of Capitol Police opening the doors and standing aside as people filed in past them?

Spencer Brown reports:

In a joint statement released with their findings, the five Republicans said that when Pelosi rejected [Jim] Banks and [Jim] Jordan, “we knew she intended to play politics instead of addressing the massive security failures that lead to that day. We said then that we would investigate and get to the bottom of why the Capitol was left so unprepared that day, and what needs to be done to make sure our security apparatus is never left so unprepared again,” the lawmakers’ statement continues. “Unsurprisingly, the Select Committee appears to have spent almost no time on this issue. We release the following report to answer these questions, and to lay a groundwork for security reforms as we prepare to lead a safer and more secure Campus in the 118th Congress and beyond.”

Among the group’s findings: “Widespread concern from Democrat leadership over ‘optics’ in the aftermath of Summer 2020 ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests prevented early deployment of the National Guard.”
