Elie Mystal says telling the truth about white people can harm one's career

Here at Twitchy, we editors are supposed to follow the Associated Press Stylebook when it comes to spelling, capitalization, abbreviations, etc. I still don’t capitalize “black,” though, even though the AP adopted that style in 2020. (The Washington Post has decided to capitalize both White and Black, even though the AP says capitalizing White subtlely conveys legitimacy to the white supremacist movement.) Me, I lowercase both, because I am offended that the AP’s reasoning is so specious. Black is capitalized, they say, because the word “includes the shared experience of discrimination due solely to the color of one’s skin.” Therefore, you lowercase white because “white people generally do not share the same history and culture, or the experience of being discriminated against because of skin color.”

So … all people with black skin share the same history and culture?

And if white people “generally do not share the same history and culture,” then why are we always told about “whiteness” and how it’s a) bad and b) systematic in everything in this country?

That’s stupid.

The Nation justice correspondent, Elie Mystal, whom Joy Reid brings on her show to make her look less racist, raises the question with this tweet: What is the “truth” about white people?

Where in his career would Mystal be if he weren’t apprehensive about telling the truth about white people to the white people at The Nation or MSNBC?
