We’ve been hearing a lot about “ableism” recently, ever since that NBC News interview with John Fetterman that was conducted via closed captioning because he was having trouble understanding the spoken word. Did that disqualify him to be a senator? Of course not … what about senators who wear glasses? They’re using assistive technology to allow them to do their jobs. Are you going to ban glasses from the Capitol?
People are (rightfully) worried about Fetterman’s mental capacity. He didn’t even speak when President Joe Biden flew into Pittsburgh to headline a campaign rally. (Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, told the press that Biden’s visit was a “celebration” and not an opportunity for interviews.)
This editor is pretty sure Fetterman is going to win Pennsylvania (even after tonight’s debate), but there sure are a lot of people joining in to drag him across the finish line. The New York Times just happens to have a piece today by a neuroscientist who tells us all about the brain’s ability to heal. Fetterman has said that he’ll be fine by January. Will he?
In Opinion
We “do a poor job of understanding how the brain can heal itself and why stroke survivors may recover more completely when those around them are supportive and compassionate,” Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroscientist who had a severe stroke, writes.https://t.co/0jrYmgvj1a

We all know what the NYT Opinion piece would be if Fetterman the stroke victim had an R after his name. 🙄@JillBolteTaylor

It’s kinder not to elect him to a position that will only stress him out.

Maybe he should wait till he is healthy to run.

i dont think anyone has issues with letting him recover.. but isnt it a fair question to know if hes fit for office before hes potentially elected?
— Mark (@flemgoblue) October 25, 2022
The Times went from suggesting the 25th amendment for walking down a ramp to publishing op-eds telling us Senate candidates who can't process are just fine and should be supported.

an opinion piece about how "non science" and emotion makes fetterman fit for office. GFYS nytimes

Well, recovering is great. Maybe not for someone running for senate…
That makes sense, right?— Wylē (@D0gWylie) October 25, 2022
Surely there’s someone more fit to run than a recent stroke victim that clearly is still suffering…

Who does the @nytimes want to win? I can’t tell

Someone wrote this with a straight face

If he needs everyone around him to be supportive it sounds like he's not physically up to a political campaign.
— Kelly (@Kisouttahere) October 25, 2022
"He can't process the world, but you should elect him to the Senate because it would be nice" is a bold take
— RunningScared2 (@RScared2) October 25, 2022
Well not sure losing is going to help his recovery…he should sit this one out and surround himself with people who are supportive and compassionate and then run again next time when he is up to it…
— IB/AP Economics (@IBEconomics1) October 25, 2022
It sounds like he should take time to recover and not enter into the stress that comes with being a senator. Isn’t that the compassionate thing to do?
