Remember when the Washington Post’s Jen Rubin said, “Trust me,” Bill Kristol’s endorsement of Terry McAuliffe for Virginia governor “will be big”? McAuliffe certainly appreciated it, touting Kristol as the “leading conservative in America.” Kristol, editor-at-large of The Bulwark, proved that his endorsement wouldn’t not, indeed, be big. We wouldn’t even say that Kristol is the leading principled conservative™ in America, but he still sees it as his job to give unsolicited advice to Beto O’Rourke in his gubernatorial campaign. Even some liberals thought O’Rourke went too far in crashing a news conference about the Uvalde school shooting, and Kristol has a better slogan.
Beto could say: Gov. Abbott, sadly, puts the gun lobby first. I’ll put Texas first.

Powerful. Maybe O’Rourke even saw it:
Abbott’s priority is the gun lobby. Mine is the people of Texas.

Genius. That will surely be the winning message. Now it’s clear why you guys get paid for your opinions. Profound.

Why not "Abbott drinks the blood of children," Bill? If you're gonna defect, your new tribe needs to see more commitment. https://t.co/Ohwn4ZXGB0

The "gun lobby" is a weasel phrase weasels like Kristol use to imply the NRA is Smith & Wesson, the same way the pharma + finance lobbies are Pfizer + Citibank.
NRA consists of gun owners, not makers. That's why it has influence. Because they donate, knock on doors, and vote. https://t.co/imVhEUxCAs

Bill Kristol once had the ear of presidents, but has now been reduced to…Beto fanboy.
I almost feel sorry for him. https://t.co/GrnbT5i0kP

20 years ago I never could have imagined Bill Kristol offering unsolicited messaging advice to a Democrat seeking to unseat an incumbent Texas governor. We live in strange times.

There sure were a lot of people who quote-tweeted Kristol and tagged O’Rourke. This slogan just might be the one that pulls out a win for him.
