We noticed that The Dispatch didn’t figure into Bulwark editor-at-large Bill Kristol’s tweet, which is interesting. As Twitchy reported, it was just a couple of days ago when The Dispatch’s David French let us know who he’d be calling “conservative” from now on:
It's time to stop using the word "conservative" to broadly describe the right or the Republican Party. It fits some individuals (and I'll use it then), but it increasingly doesn't fit the institution, and it definitely doesn't fit much of the right.
— David French (@DavidAFrench) April 21, 2022
Now, just a few days later, it looks like Kristol is doing something similar in calling out who’s a Romney or Reagan conservative (why would he ever use those two names in the same sentence?) and who isn’t, and apparently, National Review is getting chucked out with Ben Shapiro and Govs. Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis.
The conservatism of DeSantis and Abbott, of @benshapiro and @NRO, is perfectly recognizable. It’s not the American conservatism of Reagan to Romney (which may well prove an anomaly in the history of conservatism), it’s the European conservatism of the 1920s and early 1930s.

A guy associated with The Bulwark is throwing National Review under the bus? Where does conservatism come in in this scenario? By more conservative do we mean who gets in line at the polls first to vote for Joe Biden a second time?
Am I hallucinating or is this the moment when Bill Kristol officially used his status as Final Arbiter to formally read National Review out of the true conservative movement? https://t.co/tkIhtW72XP

Yes, Kristol used to write for National Review.
I feel comfortable in saying that, while neither Greg Abbott nor Ron DeSantis is a 100% ideal conservative (even Reagan & Coolidge weren't), both are closer to the ideal than any GOP POTUS nominee since Reagan. Certainly closer than Romney or Dole. https://t.co/4cLOyf4ZvZ

French and Kristol coordinating talking points again. As if either know what conservativism is. It's surely not what they think it is. https://t.co/2Ru9cIWDJk

It's certainly more conservative than anything you are. https://t.co/l1zPLA1akx

It's certainly not the conservatism of Biden and McAuliffe https://t.co/KbuadUHgpc

Yes because Reagan would have been perfectly cool with Disney advocating for children to be taught about gender identity https://t.co/XjIoV9hGdg

As with every one of these back stabbers, everything here is a lie. The "Let's lose" mentality came from Europe and has been getting progressively more pervasive as years have gone by.
If you're so interested in letting the left win, just be honest about it. https://t.co/ahc29mdiZS

Sorry Bill, who are you again? You haven't written/said anything prescient, insightful, or interesting in 7 years. Go out and talk to people. https://t.co/IEzgoO6KRn

None of you idiots get it. @BillKristol understands, just like everyone at @jacobin that Democrats are actually conservatives if you look at the grand scale. https://t.co/9rQL88V3Wp

its ironic that @benshapiro has the same ideals as nazi sympathizers. no wonder he is so angry and hateful. https://t.co/e5meNcPMZT

Reagan and Romney are not in the same universe.
To be a conservative you must make and effort to conserve something(s). https://t.co/TAawzSqcKs

I’m pretty sure the anomaly is second wave neoconservatism. https://t.co/050ToMs3Qz

Bill, after enabling and white-knighting for Dems all these years, wants to define American conservatism. https://t.co/B6S2C5vu4z

It was never about Trump for Bill. He said it was, but he lied.
As far as I know, Bill has no discernable conservative opinions on any issue.
You can dislike the tactics of the more aggressive right, but you have to at least have some opinion that isn't left-wing. https://t.co/Bi16Nio0rr

National Review, which ran a whole issue on “The Case Against Trump,” is too close to DeSantis? What?
We can’t wait to hear someone from The Dispatch weigh in on this take.
