A lot of Democrats are seeing red over Sen. Joe Manchin over his holding up of President Biden’s multi-trillion Build Back Better legislation, and a lot of people are taking potshots at his state. As we reported earlier, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the point that she represents more people than he does … plus or minus a million.
Bette Midler is a great example: she tweeted that Manchin wants the rest of America to be like West Virginia; poor, illiterate, and strung out.
What #JoeManchin, who represents a population smaller than Brooklyn, has done to the rest of America, who wants to move forward, not backward, like his state, is horrible. He sold us out. He wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out.

She did apologize to the people of West Virginia, saying she was “seeing red,” which a lot of people are promising she’ll be doing in 2022.
I apologize to the good people of WVA for my last outburst. I’m just seeing red; #JoeManchin and his whole family are a criminal enterprise. Is he really the best WV has to offer its own citizens? Surely there’s someone there who has the state’s interests at heart, not his own!

They elected him, so the citizens must have thought he was the best offering of the choices given. Maybe because they’re all illiterate and strung out on meth.
Wow, yet another pile of 💩from the hateful, elitest, bigoted idiot, Bette.

Your bigotry is showing.
California has the lowest literacy rate in the nation. WVA's is 10 points higher.
California is 12% of the U.S. population but 33% of its welfare recipients.
As for OD's, California is rapidly catching up.
Please research before tweeting ignorance.

He represented his constituents. Unless you live in WV and he's your senator, then shush.
— Beth Baumann (@eb454) December 20, 2021
Bette, that’s not fair. West Virginia is full of good people who work hard and take care of each other. Dealing in stereotypes doesn’t help
— Jane Donovan (@JaneDon32229154) December 20, 2021
Thanks. Currently sitting in a part of WV on my lunch break from my JOB. Oh, and I’m not strung out! Can’t believe she posted that.
— Kim (@justanotherkim1) December 20, 2021
I have a PhD. I am not illiterate or poor or strung out. I am an educator who works 10+ hours a day helping children learn and supporting them when no one else will.
— Dr. Ang (@ladyvolhoops) December 20, 2021
I am from WV. I am not illiterate or strung out. College graduate. Please choose words carefully as you seem to assuming something about people you know nothing about.

🧐 Why insult the entire state of West Virginia?? It’s a beautiful state with good people!
— Charlie Zimmerman (@Charlie_Z) December 20, 2021
I would suggest that you remember there are real people at the other end of this tweet, and that shaming an entire state for things largely out of their control isn’t a great look.
— Cate (@CateIsMilesAway) December 20, 2021
This is not it, Bette. Wow.
— Leigh-Anne ❤️⚡️💙 (@misslayost) December 20, 2021
Cry more, douchebag.
— Paul D. (@pdon115) December 20, 2021
If you want BBB, pass it in your state. Simple as that. A bipartisan group of senators decided it was too inflationary, too expensive, and too extreme.

Thank god for Joe Manchin and his guts to stand up against this terrible bill.
— BalzoutWV (@Parsons1870) December 20, 2021
He's awesome.
— Invisible Constituent (@JustGreggo) December 20, 2021
Such compassion Bette
— John (@9starmtn) December 20, 2021
We’re certain she didn’t apologize over the backlash over her first tweet because the replies are full of “Amen, sister!”
Too late. “When people show you who they are, believe them”.
