We’ve heard plenty of takes on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal Thursday, and we’ve also learned that 2020 presidential contender Kamala Harris has signed on to co-sponsor it. But we’re still not sure … it’s a genuine House resolution, but people like Dave Weigel are telling us that it shouldn’t be taken literally.
Here’s Hot Air’s John Sexton with a summary.
Just read this Green New Deal analysis piece at Politico: https://t.co/JCasERUnjq
So I guess the "smart take" on the GND is going to be that she doesn't *really* mean it. She can't because that would be, well, delusional.— John Sexton (@verumserum) February 7, 2019
Earlier today Dave Weigel was arguing that she didn't really mean to get rid of airplanes even though that's pretty much what the summary document says.
— John Sexton (@verumserum) February 7, 2019
I think the 'she doesn't really mean it' arguments are going to hit a wall as it becomes obvious that she really means it. This is a person who described America as "dystopian" a couple weeks ago. She meant that too.

Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberly Strassel read the Green New Deal and says she was nearly in tears laughing by the end of it.
1) By the end of the Green New Deal resolution (and accompanying fact sheet) I was laughing so hard I nearly cried. If a bunch of GOPers plotted to forge a fake Democratic bill showing how bonkers the party is, they could not have done a better job. It is beautiful. #GreenNewDeal

2) See Ron Bailey for look at sheer number of turbines, solar panels, facilities necessary just for the "renewable electricity" bit. Wud need 500k square km, bigger than California. Also note, govt will pay for these–not private sector. https://t.co/wQ0C6wonha
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
3) Also, AOC would put charging stations "everywhere," upgrade or tear down "every building" in the country (homes and businesses), install high-speed rail across every state, upgrade all our infrastructure. (Maybe once Ds allow permitting reform? LOL. LOL. LOL.)
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
Sure, it would be “impossible” to build a wall on the southern border, but install a high-speed rail network that would replace air travel and do it in a decade? Sure. Hey, remember when President Barack Obama said part of the 2009 stimulus bill would be used to build a high-speed rail network joining the country? And how he promised to convert the entire White House fleet of cars to electric vehicles within one year of becoming president? Good times.
4)Somehow, government-run healthcare, "family sustainable" wages, paid leave, and "affordable" housing are also "required" for a clean economy. I would love to understand this logic. (And imagine what wages will need to be to pay for billion-dollar-per-kilowatt electricity)
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
5) Key part though people is bit in fact sheet that explains why resolution is not immediately banning fossil fuels or demanding zero-emissions across economy. Because "we aren't sure that we'll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast." Note "fully."
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
6) Planes run on fossil fuel. No fossil fuel, no visits to granny. Cows produce methane, why alarmists want to get rid of livestock. She can't do it "fully" in 10 years, but AOC is coming after ur air miles and bacon. This is honesty about how Ds wud micromanage private life.
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
7)And how to pay for mass trillions in cost? Don't worry! Federal Reserve will just "extend credit" And "new public banks can be created to extend credit too." Because, you know, like, money is just paper, and how hard can it be to make some more of the stuff, right? Right?
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
8) Ok. Back to laughing.
— Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) February 7, 2019
Yes indeed. It is truly hard to read this bill and not burst out laughing. I am wondering whether the authors on the Left who puts this out are either insane, have a jocular sense of humor, or are intellectually disabled.

That can’t be real. I need to read this.

So ridiculous.

Comprise and put high speed rail on top of the wall.

Hey! I was planning on being first in line for that "unwilling to work" money grab!

The power grid is struggling now. Imagine being held up by hamsters on wheels? The power grid will fail the moment you plug in a toothbrush. Forget the electric bills and time you would need to waste charging your car. ?♂️

Just a rehash of the “Leap Manifesto,” published in Canada in 2015. They missed the irony that it’s basically a leap off an economic cliff.
Yet another delusional, Socialist, environmentalist, vegetarian fantasy. I’m betting AOC will still insist on hitching rides with the 89th.— MSG (@BurntCapital) February 7, 2019
People who borrow $100,000 for a degree in Urban Art Appreciation Studies will support this.

Yeah, I can see it now. Farmer John in North Dakota takes his Tesla, which won't start because it's 2 below zero, to pick up his supplies at the nearest store, which is about 40 miles away. Did this chick ever step foot out of NYC or DC?
— Shari Hughes (@ShariHuz) February 7, 2019
I guess Farmer John will have to get a wind powered truck. LOL
— Netmilsmom (@Netmilsmom) February 7, 2019
Or ride his cow into town…..oh wait
— Kari Kullman (@KariKullman) February 7, 2019
Has this hot mess been restored to Ocasio-Cortez’s website yet so more people can laugh at it?
