Hey, we work in media so it’s never fun to write about journalists being laid off en masse. But as Twitchy reported earlier Thursday, there were a lot of layoffs Wednesday at BuzzFeed, HuffPost, and Gannett.
BuzzFeed, for one, cut about 250 people from its staff:

And now we’ve learned that HuffPost Opinion — the entire section — has been cut.
Like so many talented and lovely journalists, I was laid off today.
If you're in the market for an opinion editor with a huge and diverse rolodex, or a columnist with 10 years of writing about gender politics (and a literal PhD in romantic comedies) under her belt, talk to me.
— Chloe Angyal (@ChloeAngyal) January 24, 2019
For those who are wondering, @HuffPost Opinion — the entire section — is being eliminated. The beautiful, diverse, inclusive baby we built from scratch is gone.
— Chloe Angyal (@ChloeAngyal) January 24, 2019
Seriously, we hope Chloe Angyal lands on her feet soon, hopefully with someone who appreciates that Ph.D. in romantic comedies.
"a columnist with 10 years of writing about gender politics"
"the entire section — is being eliminated"
Coincidence?
I think not.
— ar chroi (@Ar_Chroi) January 24, 2019
I noticed that, too. How critical to society is a gender politics writer?
— Pcesofeight (@Pcesofeight) January 24, 2019
Honestly, in 2019, we’d have bet that the position of gender politics writer would be as safe as could be. We make fun of gender politics pieces all the time here and there never seems to be an end to them.
Hard pass.
— BattleSwarm (@BattleSwarmBlog) January 24, 2019
True fact: Andrew Breitbart was one of the founders of The Huffington Post. We’re pretty sure he wouldn’t recognize it.
Why on God’s green earth would any respectable periodical hire someone with “10 years of writing about gender politics” who wasted thousands of dollars on the most useless PhD of all time? And thinks that this is an accomplishment?
— NotYourFutureAtty (@Caw_Dull) January 24, 2019
Because, birdbrain, the likelihood is that she learned to write really well during her years of education and experience.
— Dr. Nancy Glass (@DrNancyGlass1) January 24, 2019
So did thousands of other unemployed or marginalized minorities and women who didn’t have the privilege of spending 3+ years in school learning, literally, about “romantic comedies.” But alas, the white former HuffPo writer with a PhD is more deserved!
— NotYourFutureAtty (@Caw_Dull) January 24, 2019
Losing employment really sucks. And while I feel sorry for your loss, I feel you shoule invest some time and upskill yourself in actually employable and marketable skill. PhD in rom com(if real) sounds more like an insult to the real PhDs who are doing actual meaningful work.
— Alok Sharma (@AayeinKonchi) January 24, 2019
on personal level, I am sorry for the hardship.
yet, talented and lovely, gender politics, laid off columnist with PhD in romantic comedies sounds as coming from @benshapiro prophecies
— karol_zimmer (@zimmer_karol) January 24, 2019
I got laid off recently too, it sucks. Too bad I don't have a PhD in romcoms…
— Name cannot be blank (@braingenius69) January 24, 2019
A PhD in “chick flicks”? But seriously, sorry to hear about the cuts.
— Rob Williams (@robwilliamsNY) January 24, 2019
Hugh Grant is hiring.
— ViDevi (@ViDevi2) January 24, 2019
OK, we laughed.
How did you get a PhD in that?
— Phanto (@Phanto) January 24, 2019
Is this satire?
This reads like satire.
Anyway, I'm willing to help you find a job. Do you have any marketable skills?
— Felix (@RFelixHampton) January 24, 2019
Thankfully you can learn to code
— Smirking Charlemagne?☦☧ (@ChristmasThanos) January 24, 2019
Do you think near-constant negative coverage of @realDonaldTrump has resulted in @HuffPost and @BuzzFeed layoffs?
— The Returning (@TheReturning1) January 24, 2019
— Chris Wray (@chriswray3) January 24, 2019
Many of us did not get our dream jobs. We picked ourselves up, brushed ourselves off, and started again. It was tough, but many became more than they had ever hoped to be. Don’t let this define you, be tempered by it. Be a heroine. Maybe the world has enough opinion editors.
— R.E. Headsworth (@REHeadsworth) January 24, 2019
Sorry you were let go. It's an awful feeling.
"10 years of writing about gender politics and a literal PhD in romantic comedies"
But yeah… no thanks
— Sword Spirit (@TheSwordSpirit) January 24, 2019
Millennials and their unnecessary qualifications … ? Dear Gen Z, please choose apprenticeships over degrees.
— EdifyLDN (@EdifyLDN) January 24, 2019
Once again, it might not sound like it, but best of luck in finding a fulfilling new job.
Wonder what’s trending over at HuffPost Opinion today?
