As Twitchy reported earlier, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has submitted a second criminal referral to the FBI after NBC News’ report on Thursday questioned the “veracity of the allegations” submitted in a sworn statement by celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti.
Hang on … it wasn’t until this Thursday that NBC News ran a piece suggesting one of Avenatti’s witnesses submitted a bogus sworn statement?
NBC News’ Kate Snow interviewed Avenatti’s client, Julie Swetnick, and on Saturday wanted to provide some context to her story.
Important context to my and @annaschecter’s story regarding a second woman Michael Avenatti put forward to corroborate Julie Swetnick’s claims about Brett Kavanaugh 1/8

My interview with Ms. Swetnick aired on October 1. She was making serious claims, so we took care to provide viewers the full context around her allegations and our reporting with a 13+ min piece 2/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
We also made clear – in the interest of full transparency – that NBC News had not been able to independently verify her claims. 3/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
But you ran the interview anyway because … she was making serious claims? This is like Buzzfeed printing the debunked Trump dossier in full without having verified any of it.
After repeated requests to Avenatti for corroboration of Swetnick’s story, he had conferenced us in to a call with a woman. The day after our Swetnick intvw aired, Mr. Avenatti tweeted out a sworn statement from that other woman. It was inconsistent with what she had told us. 4/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
Shocker! Swetnick’s story seemed so solid.
By the time we were able to find the woman independently from Mr. Avenatti, who declined to give us her full legal name and phone number, and fully report and vet her story, the Kavanaugh confirmation process was over and the news value was limited. 5/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
To be clear – we did NOT have enough reporting to publish the second woman’s account until after Justice Kavanaugh secured enough votes for confirmation. 6/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
When Senator Grassley cited my interview with Swetnick this week when making a criminal referral, the second woman’s story became newsworthy again, so we published right away. 7/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
We always want to be clear and fully transparent around our reporting, and that’s what we’re doing here. 8/8
— Kate Snow (@tvkatesnow) October 27, 2018
It’s pretty transparent what you were doing.
You wanted the ratings. They weren't serious claims. Please stop lying.

Also it was a numbers game for the Left. Adding up false women to create a pattern.

What's the matter? You afraid you'll be included in the charges against Avanetti and Swetnick for obstruction? About time the media is held accountable for spreading lies.
— ?SageAine3?Q (@SageAineQ) October 27, 2018
This thread is a lie…
1) NBC ran uncorroborated hoax allegations against Kavanugh
2) NBC withheld proof of Kavanaugh's innocence
3) NBC ignored editorial standards to smear Kavanaugh, but now want to hide behind those same standard to justify not clearing him
4) Fuck NBC. https://t.co/JCBlR1EGN8

Kate, you relentlessly pushed a partisan smear, against a good & innocent man.
America will never forget what you did.
The sooner you frauds leave journalism, the better. You've destroyed its credibility.
Stand aside, so others can try to repair the damage you've caused.

Wow what a crap shoot maze you spin.
— CH (@b00buuuu) October 27, 2018
You are quite the activist. Good luck in oblivion…
— John Minogue (@minoguejjm) October 27, 2018
Lies. You didn’t want Kavanaugh confirmed so you sat on exculpatory evidence.
You’re an activist, not a journalist.
— Peter Lloyd (@Suffragentleman) October 27, 2018
You lied. You hid exculpatory information. You acted out a narrative rather than delivered the news. You are a #propagandist.
— Jim Hall (@WFSecurityNerd) October 27, 2018
Not persuasive. Anothing obvious incident of MSM bias. They obviously concealed information.
— KC Oracle (@KCOracle) October 27, 2018
You got caught. Just admit it.
— gasmd (@magaFTWdaily) October 27, 2018
You were part of the scam plain and simple. And because this story could damage the President Trump and his justice pick you ran with it. Did you apply the same standard with President Obama? NO
— Miriam Ludwig (@miriamtludwig) October 27, 2018
Why was it ever reported in the first place? That is the shame that NBC, MSNBC and the rest of the media must bear. Reporting this defamatory allegation without any evidence is disgraceful and the reason why trust in your collective professional integrity is waning.
— dudleydoo (@Dudders8869) October 27, 2018
you failed to report the truth which means you were neither clear or fully transparent. Worse, you caused damage that will not be repaired.
— Northern Dakota Beholder (@NoDakBeholder) October 27, 2018
Let’s be honest here. You wanted a specific outcome and you got it. Facts only were important once someone else pointed them out. You are playing catch-up now.
It’s embarrassing. It’s shameful.
— ⓃⒾⒸⓀ ⒷⓇⓄⒹⒾⒺ (@NicholasBrodie) October 27, 2018
And that’s why you’re considered fake news. You don’t research anymore, you just publish.
— ?KLynne?? KAG? (@MAGAKlynne) October 27, 2018
Well done. You’ve showed future journalists how easy it is to destroy your reputation by following your ideology rather than journalistic integrity. pic.twitter.com/ab86CZ2RA2
— ?Libtard Crusher???? (@UdontOhno) October 27, 2018
You let a known lie stand. Your personal bias drove your reporting. You are a menace to your profession and to the citizenry of the United States. We don’t care what YOU think or feel. The truth and provable facts are what supporters of @POTUS want.
The rest is #FakeNews— Jeannie ❌ (@slainte39) October 27, 2018
Stop. Just stop. This was intentional and withheld to aid in the destruction of a good man’s character in an effort to sway his SC vote. It’s sick.
