Empire State Building goes Green and White for Eagles NFC win and hilarity ensues

The Empire State Building lit up the night in Green and White on Sunday evening in honor of the Philadelphia Eagles win over the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC Championship title:

This show of support for a rival team, did not, of course, go over well with New York fans:

“King Kong should have destroyed you”. Harsh, but hysterical.

Even other buildings chimed in:

Pennsylvania’s Department of General Services had a suggestion:

Well played!

NYC Mayor Eric Adams was asked about the situation by New York’s ABC 7:

For Giants fans, it felt like salt in the wounds after division rival Philly trounced New York in the playoffs just last week. Now, Mayor Adams is even weighing in — calling it ‘unacceptable.’

“Unfortunately someone did not get the memo at the Empire State Building,” Adams said, “That got away from us the way the Eagles game got away from us with the Giants.”

More from the article:

As for the lighting approval process – the Empire State Building also makes clear that it is ‘privately owned, has its own selection review process…and has sole discretion over what : are and are not approved.” It also says it is ‘under no obligation to provide specific feedback regarding status, merit and/or denial.”

Well, doesn’t sound like there’s a whole lot anyone can do about that!

Some people did question whether the account was real:

A quick look at the official website for the Empire State Building confirms that the lights in question were indeed on the schedule:

On that note, they did tweet out the following in honor of the Kansas City Chiefs later in the evening:

As for the New York Giants? They had this to say:

So are we, Giants. So are we.
