Saudi official blames Russia for continuance of Syrian violence, Obama congratulates Putin

Reuters, via Jerusalem Post:

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister told Russia on Saturday that its veto of a UN Security Council resolution that condemned the Syrian government had allowed violence to continue and called on Moscow to back Arab efforts to end the crisis in Syria.

“The position of those countries which thwarted the UN Security Council resolution and voted against the resolution of the General Assembly gave the Syrian regime a license to extend its brutal practices against the Syrian people,” Saud al-Faisal told an Arab ministerial meeting that was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

China joined Russia in vetoing the resolution that was based on an Arab peace plan.

The Saudi minister also said he hoped Russia would “support the decisions of the Arab League’s council regarding solving the situation in Syria,” a reference to an Arab initiative that includes calling for President Bashar Assad to step aside.
