How romantic: Guy pretends to get arrested then proposes to his girlfriend

Daiwon McPherson wanted to make a big statement when he proposed to his girlfriend. Apparently, flashmob proposals to Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” aren’t cool anymore, so McPherson came up with a new plan: he staged a police standoff and pretended to get arrested. How romantic.

Friday night, McPherson’s girlfriend, Shawna Blackmon, received a phone call saying he had been stopped by the police. Blackmon immediately panicked, knowing McPherson was armed.

“I was scared. I said…’They are going to shoot him,’” she told WPMI.

A video of the proposal then shows two police cars swarming a gas station in Mobile, Alabama, where McPherson was “pulled over.” The officers jump out their cars, pull out their weapons, and order McPherson to the ground.

Blackmon quickly runs up to her boyfriend and asks the officers to not shoot. She even warns them that McPherson is armed. The officers then ask Blackmon to remove McPherson’s weapon, but when she turns around she finds her boyfriend on one knee with a ring in his hand instead. Surprise!

While Blackmon said yes to McPherson’s proposal, the public is saying no.

McPherson said he wanted his proposal to send a message about Black Lives Matter and police-community relations.

“First thing you’re going to think is we got another black man going to get killed by two police officers, nope that was the whole flip,” he told WPMI.

However, most people found the stunt offensive.

Despite what others are saying, Blackmon thought the idea was perfect.

“I felt like that was the perfect set up to do something like that and bring everybody together,” she said.

Because nothing says ‘I love you’ quite like a marriage proposal that’s really a political statement.
