Fresh take: Atlantic writer Hanna Rosin says Jeb Bush is 'kinda Hispanic'

Jeb Bush identified himself as Hispanic on a voter registration form in 2009. Many poked fun at Bush, but Atlantic writer Hanna Rosin says he may have been right all along! She implies that you are Hispanic if you say you are Hispanic.

Here’s a quick primer on how that definition would work in practice (adapted from Pew Research):

Q. I immigrated to Phoenix from Mexico. Am I kinda Hispanic?
A. You are if you say so.

Q. My parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico. Am I kinda Hispanic?
A. You are if you say so.

Q. My grandparents were born in Spain but I grew up in California. Am I kinda  Hispanic?
A. You are if you say so.

Q. I was born in Maryland and married an immigrant from El Salvador. Am I kinda Hispanic?
A. You are if you say so.

Q. My mom is from Chile and my dad is from Iowa. I was born in Des Moines. Am I kinda Hispanic?
A. You are if you say so.

It can’t get much simpler than that.

Alas, not everyone agrees with this approach:
