49ers' Chris Culliver spouts off about gays; Hate tweets pour in

After going off on an anti-gay rant, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver has suddenly become the most hated man on Twitter:

Just reflect on that last tweet for a moment. On the second thought, don’t.

Let’s be clear: Chris Culliver has the right to his views, no matter how morally odious and factually-questionable. (How can he be absolutely sure there are no gay players on his team?)

But he has a professional obligation not to embarrass his employer. And let’s not forget where his employer is based:

The 49ers pretended to be outraged, but they merely slapped Culliver on the wrist:

“The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made [Tuesday], and have addressed the matter with Chris. There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community.”

By contrast, a 49ers player who complained about lack of playing time last month was suspended.
