I actually meant to get to this the other day, but that other day was Arraignment Day and things got a little crazy around here, as you may recall. But I think it’s still worth doing a post today because it’s important to keep shining a spotlight on terrible journalism.
Melanie Zanona is a Capitol Hill reporter at CNN, which means she’s had a good amount of practice when it comes to reporting on Republicans in a way that’s palatable to CNN viewers and readers. And what is more palatable to CNN viewers and readers than taking every opportunity to delegitimize everything the GOP says and does?
On Tuesday, we learned that House Republicans were deposing former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell for their ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden’s laptop. Here’s how Zanona reported the news:
New: Republicans on the so-called weaponization of the federal government are deposing Michael Morell, a former deputy CIA director, today, per sources. Morell was one of a dozen intel officials that suggested the Hunter Biden laptop story was part of a Russian disinfo effort.

“So-called weaponization of the federal government.”
“So-called”?

Melanie makes it sound like the House GOP is exaggerating, like the federal government hasn’t been weaponized against Republicans and conservatives by the Biden administration and Democrats.
The thing is that the federal government has been weaponized.
it's not so-called, it's called that https://t.co/ykvDVLEoJ1

It’s called that, because it is that. The subcommittee is literally called the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.
The official name of the committee does not include "so-called."
Have you tagged other special committees as "so-called"? Or just this one?
— Taylor Gage (@gagetaylor) April 4, 2023
Just this one as far as we know. Which is pretty rude on its face. It’s also quite dishonest in suggesting that there hasn’t actually been weaponization. We’ve seen extensive documentation proving that the federal government has been weaponized. The Twitter Files alone contain mountains of evidence for weaponization.
And yet here’s Melanie, insinuating that House Republicans are just screwing around by investigating the laptop story.
Be careful. Some might detect bias in your tweet, jOuRnAlIsT…🙄
