The New York Times is kicking off February with quite a bang — at Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s expense:
I think it’s awful that in this climate, the New York Times seems to think it’s a good use of its time to besmirch an Emmy winning journalist

The NYT isn’t pulling any punches today:
SCOOP: 9 top NY health officials have quit as Gov. Cuomo all but declares war on his own public health bureaucracy in the middle of the pandemic.
By @jdavidgoodman @JoeKGoldstein @jessemckinley https://t.co/m22AsMjnt8— Cliff Levy (@cliffordlevy) February 1, 2021
The deputy commissioner for public health at the NYS Health Dept resigned in late summer. Soon after, the director of its bureau of communicable disease control also stepped down. So did the medical director for epidemiology and the state epidemiologist.https://t.co/m22AsMjnt8
— Cliff Levy (@cliffordlevy) February 1, 2021
Cuomo himself has scorned public health officials: “When I say ‘experts’ in air quotes, it sounds like I’m saying I don’t really trust the experts. Because I don’t.”
He says the officials have no idea how to conduct real-world, large scale operations.https://t.co/m22AsMjnt8— Cliff Levy (@cliffordlevy) February 1, 2021
"Mr. Cuomo has all but declared war on his own public health bureaucracy" https://t.co/YEVd5iuRu2
— Dana Rubinstein (@danarubinstein) February 1, 2021
"tensions worsened in recent months as state health officials said they often found out about major changes in pandemic policy only after Mr. Cuomo announced them at news conferences — and then asked them to match their health guidance to the announcements."
— Dana Rubinstein (@danarubinstein) February 1, 2021
“It’s the Mike Tyson line: ‘Everybody has a plan until I punch them in the face,’” Mr. Cuomo said.
— Dana Rubinstein (@danarubinstein) February 1, 2021
"The state designated as a regional vaccination hub in New York City not the city’s 6,000-person Health Department, but rather the Greater New York Hospital Association, a trade group with a multimillion-dollar lobbying arm that had been a major donor to the governor’s causes."
— Dana Rubinstein (@danarubinstein) February 1, 2021
Wow, New York Times. Do you mean to say that … Luv Guv Andrew Cuomo has actually handled his state’s COVID19 crisis horribly this whole time? We feel so blindsided! Cuomo never gave us any reason to believe that he wasn’t a competent leader.

Party that follows the SCIENCE https://t.co/TZYUiiNvzJ

Andrew Cuomo followed The Science so hard that he fell off the Boyfriend Cliff.

Andrew Cuomo was always a monster and a fraud. But for some reason, the media didn’t seem to notice up until very recently.
Reminder that journos hailed Cuomo as a hero and the guy got an emmy https://t.co/HLnxcHQ8f8

What changed?
Conservatives: Cuomo sucks and his handling of COVID is abysmal, Cuomo sucks and his handling of COVID is abysmal, Cuomo sucks and his handling of COVID is abysmal
Libs on January 20, 12:00:01 PM: wait a minute guys, I’m starting to think Cuomo sucks and…
— Alex Griswold (@HashtagGriswold) February 1, 2021
What happened on January 20— ohhhhhhhh. Right.
I'm glad the press is shifting to telling the truth about Cuomo, but it is worth noting that all of this was known back in the summer. Some of us were screaming about it constantly, but most of the coverage remained overwhelmingly positive/incurious. https://t.co/YKJ9vDVlPR
— AG (@AGHamilton29) February 1, 2021
If you're looking for an explanation for the shift, it's hard not to notice that Cuomo has spent much of his time deflecting blame for his failures to the federal government. That approach is no longer convenient for those in the press that support the current administration.

With Donald Trump gone, the media are finally liberated … to acknowledge what we’ve known all along about Andrew Cuomo.

GOP governors didn’t even have to say things like that in order to be accused of believing it.
Party of science. Why would Ron DeSantis do this? H/t @four4thefire. https://t.co/gR4j448UgT

Cuomo is all the incompetence they accused DeSantis & Trump of all rolled into one overhyped tyrant https://t.co/4IMlqKe99Q
