Earlier today, I wrote about Max Boot’s recent Washington Post piece praising and justifying President Joe Biden’s bitterly divisive speech last week, which pretty brazenly took aim at not just the “MAGA Republicans,” but every Republican and conservative and conservative-leaning person in this country.
As you may have figured out by now, I am not what you’d call a “MAGA Republican.” I’m actually officially an “unaffiliated voter” where I live. But I was still incredibly irritated and offended by Biden’s speech, because it was demagogic and disgusting. I happen to know and love some wonderful people who might identify as “MAGA Republicans” and I don’t think they’re trying to destroy our democracy. I don’t think that pro-lifers like me are dangerous or represent the far-Right lunatic fringe. This sort of naked partisan viciousness just really pisses me off.
Anyway, the reason I brought up Max Boot at the beginning of this post is that, like Max Boot, Steve Schmidt is one of those Resistance grifters who never misses his opportunity to toot his “I used to be a Republican until Donald Trump destroyed the GOP” horn and who slams Donald Trump for being divisive while making excuses for and outright congratulate the Democratic Party’s efforts to demonize the GOP through inflammatory and violent rhetoric.
So when I saw Schmidt’s tweets earlier today about how dangerous Trump and MAGA are while the current Democratic president is literally painting millions of Americans as domestic terrorists, you’d better believe I was gonna talk about them:
1/ President Biden has offered a compromise to tens of millions of Republican voters who don’t want to abandon democracy. He has said let’s work together and destroy the MAGA movement. That is the compromise. It is necessary. It must be crushed to save America.

Uhhh …
Not clear how Biden is compromising here. https://t.co/N7ioJa0gqN

He’s not compromising. And Steve doesn’t want him to compromise. Steve’s not looking for compromise; he’s looking for an authoritarian clampdown on the entire GOP. “It must be crushed.”

That is … not subtle. None of Steve Schmidt’s thread is subtle.
2/ Trump’s rhetoric is becoming more overtly extreme and is filled with promises of violence and revenge. He means every word. The Political coverage is filled with stories about fascists like @JDVance1 and @bgmasters trying to soften their anti woman extremism in time for Nov

3/ The American people must end this madness. The American people must rise up against the coward politicians who have gone off the rails and vandalized the American Republic to sate Trump and protect themselves from his ire. The fall campaign is underway and the choice is here

4/ Donald Trump is deranged, addled and depraved. He is unfit, disgraced and incompetent. He leads a minority faction that is beyond belligerent. They are teeming with menace. Enough. What they stand for is the worst cause since the last stand of Jim Crow and the Confederacy.

Calling Republicans racist should definitely convince them to take Steve seriously.
5/ The American way of life is utterly dependent on the American people picking their leaders in fair elections. The lies about the election results by MAGA extremists and Trump parrots have poisoned faith and belief in AmerIcan democracy and convinced millions of susceptible

What did Joe Biden say in his speech to convince people that the government isn’t plotting against them, though? What has Joe Biden done, period, to convince people of that? Using high gas prices to push electric vehicles that many of us can’t afford? Hiring a bunch of new IRS employees, including some that should be prepared to use deadly force if necessary? Taking one person’s hard-earned money and giving it to someone else without consent? I can sit here all day and list stuff.

“A level of grift and corruption that beggars belief,” he says without a hint of self-awareness.
8/ America has endured great crisis-is in its history. Perhaps what is different about this one is the staggering investment on the part of so many in insisting that what is clearly happening isn’t at all. The great national gaslighting rolls along for now. Time to stop it cold
— Steve Schmidt (@SteveSchmidtSES) September 6, 2022
And how, pray tell, does Steve Schmidt propose that the Resistance and Joe Biden “stop it cold”? Through not-so-thinly veiled threats? Because that hasn’t worked yet. Perhaps something more forceful, as it takes real force to crush something and stop it cold. No need to dance around it, Steve-O. Just outright ask the president to deploy the military against noncompliant citizens. It’s worked well in other countries, why not try it here?
