OK, show of hands: Is there anyone out there who didn’t see this coming?
With Donald Trump reportedly considering an executive order to the family separation policy, the goalpost shifting is officially underway. First up? MSNBC’s Chris Hayes:
As far as I can tell, whatever the president signs today will not end the so called “zero-tolerance” policy that is flooding the system with criminal prosecutions of desperate people who are overwhelmingly seeking asylum.
— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) June 20, 2018
It will likely lead to indefinite detention of children (with their parents) in violation of a federal consent decree.

Called it.
Here we go. https://t.co/Ic0NzXLBzd

Right on schedule. And here’s ThinkProgress’ Judd Legum:
LET'S BE CLEAR: Trump's "solution" to the problem of treating children inhumanely by separating them from their parents is to break the law and remove legal protections for children that prevent their indefinite detention
— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) June 20, 2018
So effing predictable.
If someone does exactly what you've been demanding they do for a week and then you just move the goal posts and continue to act just as outraged, it becomes very difficult to take your outrage seriously.

"How dare you separate children from their parents because of a legal obligation to not keep them detained?????"
*changes policy to allow family detentions
"How dare you detain children with their parents for extended periods of time???"

Also, stop saying that this allows families to be detained "indefinitely". That's misleading. They are detained, as always, until their cases are resolved. Difference now is they are proposing to remove 20 day limit for children so they can stay with parents.

Doesn’t matter. You can’t win with these people.
Keeping families together was *never* going to be good enough https://t.co/R6s683JtrD

"As far as I can tell, whatever the president signs today will not result in totally open borders, so I will slam him for it" – THERE I FIXED IT FOR YOU.

So basically y’all were lying about it being “all about separating those kids from their parents.”
It’s just that you don’t want illegal entry prosecuted. And here you are admitting to your sham crocodile tears. https://t.co/5zK3wPTHfz

Like I've been saying. It's not about separating families. It's about the prosecution. They don't believe illegals crossing our border should be prosecuted. Good luck with that, Chris. https://t.co/F2jfKt7971

And there it is. Under the rules of this game, the only way you win is by not detaining anyone.
Don’t only detain the adults and separate the kids (which I agree w/), but also don’t detain the whole family together.
In Judd’s world, the only answer is not enforcing the border. https://t.co/E2gyPVACXj

Yep.
They've been arguing in bad faith this whole time, and people got mad at us for pointing it out from the beginning.

I am curious now if the people who were legitimately concerned and wanted a real solution related to family separations will now call out those who were clear arguing in bad faith and simply wanted to score political points… https://t.co/ViIpFu6oBZ
