I watched Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas (who was arrested on drug trafficking, money laundering, and a plethora of other charges last week) get asked the most obvious question in the world this week, and her answer was somehow worse than I expected.
And considering I expect very little from any Virginia Democrat, especially from someone like Lucas, for me to be surprised at all about how awful she is in the face of possible incarceration... woof.
“What do you say to Virginians who have lost trust in you?” a reporter asked after the federal indictment dropped. Lucas, 82-year-old and still acting like she’s the one doing the interviewing, didn’t even pretend to take the premise seriously. “I don’t know that that’s a fact,” she said, as if the only thing that matters is whether she personally signed off on the public’s loss of confidence.

Sure, Louise.
The indictment charging you, your daughters, and your grandson with racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution, money laundering, and honest-services fraud is just a vibe.
IT'S ALL A PLOT.
The texts allegedly asking for “more flower,” the talk about using your position to lock down a recreational license for “generational wealth,” the controlled buys at the shop that was supposed to be selling hemp — those are all just interpretive dance.
The better question, of course, is what she has to say about the actual messages and conduct described in the charging document. But that would require acknowledging that the problem isn’t public perception; it’s the allegation that one of the most powerful Democrats in the state spent years treating her office like a side hustle for the family cannabis operation.
She legalized it, opened the store, and then allegedly kept operating outside the rules while using the same political muscle that got the bill passed to protect the enterprise. Lucas has spent decades presenting herself as the unapologetic fighter who says the quiet part out loud and dances on the graves of Republican priorities. Now she’s claiming she hasn’t noticed that a lot of people stopped buying the act the moment the FBI showed up at her office and dispensary.
Maybe the indictment is full of it. Maybe she’ll walk. But “I don’t know that that’s a fact” is not the sound of someone who still expects the public to take her word for anything. It’s the sound of someone who already knows they don’t.
