I remember 2020 like it was yesterday, when Rachel Maddow rolled out the red carpet for Mary Trump and treated every word out of her mouth like it had been handed down from on high.
Maddow and the Left in general were just so pleased to bring in a Trump family member who hated him ... Maddow could hardly contain herself.
The niece who had been estranged from Donald Trump for years suddenly became the definitive expert on his character, his family dynamics, and why he was the worst thing ever to happen to America. Her book flew off the shelves, her interview set ratings records, and the entire MSNBC universe treated her as an unimpeachable source of truth.
No one on the Left paused to ask whether a long-estranged family member with a clear agenda and a bestseller to promote might not be the most reliable narrator.

Fast forward to the Ohio governor’s race and the sudden outrage over a Ramaswamy campaign ad featuring Amy Acton’s mother. The ad has Acton’s own mother calling her a liar about her past, and the pearl-clutching from the same crowd that once celebrated family members turning on their relatives for political points has been intense.
Suddenly, estrangement matters.
Suddenly, family relationships are sacred and off-limits.
Suddenly, using a relative’s words against a candidate is beyond the pale.
The double standard is impossible to ignore. When it served the narrative against Trump, a niece who hadn’t spoken to him in years was gospel. When it undercuts a Democrat in a tight race, the same tactic is an unforgivable low.
I have zero interest in litigating the complicated and painful details of anyone’s childhood, but I do care about consistency. Media outlets and commentators who spent years elevating estranged relatives as truth-tellers don’t get to suddenly discover the sanctity of family when the target changes. This is why so many people have tuned out the selective outrage machine. Principles that only apply when convenient aren’t principles at all.
They’re just weapons. And the Left has been very clear about who gets to use them.
