I sat through the clip so you don’t have to, and I regret every second of it.
Senator Thom Tillis was on The View doing the most ordinary thing a senator can do: talking about how the party in power overreaches, and how that overreach is what put him in the Senate in the first place.
Obama-era excesses, a backlash, a career. Politics 101. The kind of point you hear on every panel that isn’t actively allergic to history.
Sunny Hostin was not having it. She wouldn’t look at him. She waved the comparison away, insisted nothing about the Obama years belongs in the same sentence as this president, and then tried to shut the whole thing down because, in her telling, what Trump has done is so unprecedented that the conversation itself is unfair.
Watch:
Sunny Hostin throws a hissy fit after Senator Thom Tillis notes the overreaches of the Obama administration helped propel his Senate campaign back in the day She refuses to make eye contact while whining and criticizing him: THOM TILLIS: The party in power talks themselves into an overreach that makes me as speaker of the House and actually makes me a U.S. Senator based on the overreach of the Obama administration. SUNNY HOSTIN: I don't think you can compare the overreach in the Obama administration than the overreach of this president. THOM TILLIS: Oh yeah. We keep on besting each other. That's part of the premise of the book too. HOSTIN: Let's just move on because what Trump has done is unprecedented. I don't think it's fair to compare the two. I think - But anyway -- [Applause] I think it's terribly disingenuous to make that type of comparison.

When Tillis noted that each side keeps topping the last, she called the comparison terribly disingenuous and got the applause she came for. That’s the move. Not a counterargument. A veto.
I have watched this show long enough to know the pattern and I have the diminished brain matter to prove it.
A Republican says something that treats Democratic administrations as part of the same country, and the table acts like he tracked mud onto the set. Eye contact becomes optional. Context becomes an insult. “Let’s just move on” is what you say when the point landed and you don’t have a better one.
Tillis wasn’t inventing a new theory of government. Parties in power convince themselves the rules are suggestions. Voters eventually notice. That is how he got there, and pretending Obama’s years were a gentle interlude doesn’t make the record disappear. It just makes the panel look like it can’t survive a sentence that doesn’t end with Trump.
The audience clapped anyway. Of course they did. On that couch, ending the comparison is the same thing as winning it.
Bless their hearts. They really think a hissy fit counts as a rebuttal.
