NYU Langone and Bellevue hospitals lose power, evacuations underway; smoke, flooding at Bellevue?

Twitchy told you earlier about power outages hitting New York City. The night took a more ominous turn as backup generators failed at two major hospitals — NYU Langone and Bellevue. FDNY is leading evacuations at both institutions, including the evacuation of babies from NYU Langone’s neonatal intensive care unit. In addition to the generator failure at Bellevue, at least one journalist on Twitter is reporting smoke at that hospital. Keep the patients, medical staff, and first responders all in your prayers.

My Fox News NY has video footage of the NYU evacuation and reports:

Fox 5’s Brian Quinn reported from outside the medical center that dozens of ambulances were apparently loading patients to be moved to other hospitals.

Bloomberg said that city workers were helping with the evacuation.

“Due to the severity of Hurricane Sandy and the higher than expected storm surge, we are in the process of transferring approximately 215 patients within the medical center to near by facilities,” NYU Langone said in a statement. “We are having intermittent telephone access issues and for this reason the receiving hospital will notify families of their relatives arrival.”
