Fix America’s Schools: Four Fast Reforms to Empower Our Kids and End the Import Dependency

In the last few days, there has been quite the debate over H1-B visas. On one hand, one side says they are being abused to bring workers in with very few skills simply because they are willing to accept bargain basement salaries. The other side says Americans aren't highly trained enough to do some jobs and we must import labor to staff these highly technical jobs.

If the American education system is failing, we must fix it at home rather than importing foreign labor to fill jobs that desperate young Americans could hold with proper training. As a former educator and parent, here are four practical, rapid-impact reforms to strengthen our schools and workforce:

  1. Enforce Zero-Tolerance Discipline and Uniforms
Eliminate excuses for disruptive behavior. Immediately remove students who interfere with learning, hold parents accountable, and make resolution their responsibility. As a last resort, direct severe cases to specialized behavioral schools—never allow them to remain in standard classrooms. Mandate uniforms district-wide to promote focus and order. This restores a productive environment for all.
  2. Mandate Phonics-Based Reading Instruction
Require every child to learn reading via proven phonics curricula, such as the highly effective A Beka program (or a secular adaptation). No exceptions. This evidence-based approach ensures universal literacy by third grade, eliminating the whole language failures that leave millions behind.
  3. Launch Comprehensive Career-Track Magnet Programs
Equip every middle and high school with multiple specialized magnets—e.g., nursing, law, plumbing, electrical, culinary, or IT. By ninth grade, students can choose college-prep or direct-workforce paths. Graduates earn certifications for immediate employment.
Real-world proof: My daughter exited high school as a certified CNA, starting at $20+/hour and now advancing to RN. My son entered the Fire Academy post-graduation; by 19, he earned nearly $60K full-time. At 25, with two promotions, he's on pace for $80K while working just 10 days a month.
  4. Expand School Choice Nationwide
Empower families with vouchers, charters, and open enrollment to escape underperforming public schools. Competition drives excellence; no child should be trapped in failure.

These changes can roll out in under a year, producing skilled, employable graduates and a stronger economy. Relying on immigration to plug workforce gaps betrays our youth—invest in Americans first.
