The X timeline served me up an interesting story from a public school teacher today. This teacher was talking about a new student in her class who had been previously homeschooled.
I had a new student in my Algebra II class. She was homeschooled previously, and this was her first experience in public school. Two days in, she’s already unerolling. I’m not surprised, given our last conversation.

Her words when I asked her what she thought: “I wanted to see…
So, the teacher figured it wouldn't work out when the student turned their work in on time and was able to hold a conversation about the material. That's pretty telling about what American public schools are turning out these days.
I was homeschooled and a big reason I won't send my kids to even the good private school in the area is because it wastes their time --their childhood. 7:40-3pm and then 2 hours of homework. Their kids. They shouldn't have a JOB. We get done in about 2 hours a day.

Exactly! I home school my own child. Academics should never take more than 2 hours IMO.

So even though Wendy works in public schools herself, she teaches her own child at home. With what she sees, who could blame her?
The gap between homeschooled kids and traditional students is about to get even wider.

My husband went back to college for a second degree at 30 years old. He comes home every day shocked at the other students behavior. They talk back, refuse to do assignments. Many students can't manage their time and are quickly overwhelmed. You can only do so much as a teacher

These are adults. Can you even imagine how much worse it must be with teenagers?
We started homeschooling my daughter at a young age. When she joined public school she came back crying the teacher kept repeating what she has already learnt. We changed her school to a private one. Wish it was possible to continue homeschooling her. She's a virtual learner

My son is in university model classical school. Works about 16 hours a week and practices golf the rest of the time.

Public school is a massive waste of time.
Thank goodness parents have options. This is why school choice is of the utmost importance. Without it, many lower income families would be stuck in low performing or failing public schools.
Homeschooling certainly has tremendous benefits.

Your student nailed the downsides of public school education.
Good for her to take the step and determine quickly that it wasn’t for her.
This student clearly has an excellent head on her shoulders along with parents who are willing to let her take chances and make decisions based on what she believes is best for her. They are giving her an appropriate amount of trust and she is making good use of it.
My kids are in public school. They are all bright and have gotten fantastic grades. Yet your post confirms a feeling that I’ve had. They seem to be coasting through it all without much effort.

I was home schooled and would finish all of my assignments in 3 hours.

When my parents put me in one of the two elite private schools I begged my teacher to let me do my schoolwork in the stairwell as the class was too chaotic.
Parents need options when their local public school isn't working for their kids. The GOP must continue to push for additional funding and more options for America's parents.
