Yesterday, I told you about some scams I found associated with the SNAP (food stamp) program. No matter what safeguards are put into place, people will always find a way to work the system. With that being said, and with the knowledge we'll never fully get rid of all fraud, here are a few suggestions I think would help reform the program.
First up, make parents responsible for the children they make. Too often, women are raising children alone or they aren't getting married because then they'll make too much money and lose benefits. The simple solution for this is requiring the single mother (or rarely father) to identify the 'absent' parent. Then, the state should automatically put the deadbeat parent on automatic child support. This takes away the incentive for couples not to marry. If a woman who is secretly living with the father of her child knows his paycheck will get automatically deducted if she pursues government benefits, she won't pursue them because they don't want a deduction order against someone they actually live with. Problem solved. If they aren't together, the caretaker parent will get more income from the deduction order and voila, she can use that money for food.
Secondly, return the program to its roots and make it truly supplemental—that’s what the S in SNAP stands for. There’s no reason for potato chips, candy, juice, or any other junk to be eligible. Limit purchases to these essentials only: lean proteins, peanut butter, cheese, tofu (for non-meat eaters), beans, rice, eggs, fruits, vegetables, milk, cottage cheese, breads, and cereal. Period. This ensures a solid, hunger-preventing diet. Recipients can use their own money for extras to suit their tastes. Make SNAP supplemental again.
Pretty sure these SNAP Starbucks Nespresso pods are a luxury at $1.62 each and not life saving from starvation. 🤷 pic.twitter.com/Vqtp8vxnY9

I love the convenience of coffee pods. I also recognize they are more expensive than using a regular coffee maker. I work two jobs. I do not have the luxury of coffee pods in my budget. That's life.
I’m once again reminding you all that our welfare system is so ridiculous that Nespresso pods are SNAP/EBT eligible. pic.twitter.com/0ZKclIpQ8O

That is taking advantage of the generosity of the American taxpayer.
None of these should be covered under SNAP EBT. These are luxury items, beyond basic nutritional sustenance. pic.twitter.com/PyGJsOYpMm

There is no need for fancy waters, protein powder or energy drinks to be on the program. All of those are items many American families see as luxuries and shouldn't be available to those who can't even feed themselves. The same goes for pricy delivery services.
This is insane:

Poor people can use SNAP/EBT to DoorDash from 7-Eleven.
What a lazy, gross, offensive waste of OUR money... https://t.co/SAMn1dWEII pic.twitter.com/ZcJNjGN2ZP
These tweaks won't fix the issue, but it would be a step toward making powerful changes in American welfare policy.
