Breaking Free from the Happy Birthday Song Outrage and the Culture of Seeking Offense

I'm the first one to support 'School Choice' because government schools are a nightmare mess. The kids are misbehaved, too many teachers don't care or are trying to indoctrinate their students, the focus isn't on Math and Reading, but rather Leftist drivel, and the list goes on and on. This story bares out a whole other problem ... some of the parents are making it impossible for teachers to even exist.

First of all, let's acknowledge there are harmful racial stereotypes in this world. At the same time, we can also internalize if this teacher sings this song to ALL of her students, she does not intend it that way. One time my Pastor taught me a really powerful lesson: when you are telling a story about a person's actions and words, it's only fair to share exactly what they said AND the spirit in which they said it. So, yes, the 'looks like a monkey and smells like one too' out of context sounds very very bad. A parent should be angry. When we add context, however, we learn this was a funny silly song this teacher has sung with all of her classes for years and years. That changes things.

It's the same way the Left used to villainize Charlie Kirk. They would take pieces and parts of his speeches, remove the context and then share them all over the internet. When people hear the entire speech, they realize they've been deceived about the man.

Children should be protected at all costs. On that, none of us would disagree. At the same time, we shouldn't walk around looking for reasons to be aggrieved. That kind of spirit of offense does nothing to make society better and everything to further erode the fabric of communities. It causes resentment and hurt feelings. That does nothing good for anybody.

My children are 26 and 19 and they sang this song to their friends when they were little.

It's a fun game for the children. If the Mom was truly concerned, she could have gone to the teacher and shared her concerns and the teacher would likely have explained the situation and then they could have moved on.

Now that the Media is involved, it will just snowball, cause additional consternation and make the world all that more divisive.
