'Hypocrite' Elton John boycotts designers who disagree with him

Just last week singer Elton John wrote an op ed about “tolerance” in which he said, “No one should be discriminated against because of who he is, or what he looks like…”

Apparently it’s ok to discriminate against people who think or believe differently though. In other words he’s a typical do as I say not as I do leftist.

Via Instagram, Elton John posted:

How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana

Imagine the screams of “bigotry” if someone suggested boycotting Elton John’s music because of his stance on this issue. Yet, Elton wants to damage someone else’s business because they hold an opinion with which he disagrees.

 The Guardian reports:

“I’m not convinced by those I call the children of chemicals, synthetic children,” he added. “Wombs for rent, sperm chosen from a catalogue … psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation,” he said. Dolce, who spent more than 20 years in a relationship with Gabbana, went on to say he could not have a child because he was gay.

Referring to children of in vitro fertilization as “synthetic children” is not accurate perhaps, but focusing on that alone misses the overall point being made by Dolce. It’s one that is more mainstream than Elton John might expect. The comments are not disparaging anyone’s children. They’re questioning whether using artificial—that’s the word doctors use to describe some of these processes— means of reproduction may have a negative impact on children.

Or how about just accepting that some people believe differently on the issue instead of playing thought police? You might think Elton John would know better after he caught flak for performing at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding. Back then he said:

When it comes to people like Rush Limbaugh, or people who might enrage you sometimes, dialogue is the only way. You have to reach out… Whether you make an impact in one year or 30 years, it doesn’t matter. You have to put your foot in the water and start the process.

We’re sure there are some valid criteria for determining whether a situation calls for “dialogue” or “ZOMG BOYCOTTT!!1!” It probably has a lot to do with the comments coming from a gay man. Identity politics demands that any member of a minority group must adhere to that group’s political orthodoxy or else face consequences. Dissent is not tolerated by the tolerance-mongers.

Elton John has every right to boycott anything he wishes, but apparently his moral outrage is dependent on which way the money is flowing.
