Jamelle Bouie is a writer for Slate. He used to work for The American Prospect and has written for The Nation, just so you know where he’s coming from. This morning he took to Twitter to analyze the “right-wing meme” that members of Congress failed to read the Obamacare bill before voting on it.

Pelosi insists she read every page of the bill. She also implied the U.S. Supreme Court is about to outlaw diaphragms, but let’s not go there.

Former Sen. Max Baucus, one of the authors of Obamacare legislation, read the whole bill, too. Oops, maybe not:

Does anyone remember this?:

Partial transcript:

They want to rush this bill through by Christmas? … At the end of this rush, they want us to vote on a bill that no one outside the Majority Leader’s conference room has seen yet. No one has seen it.

That was December 17, 2009. Nobody had seen the bill. But every Senator sat down to read the whole thing, more than 2,000 pages, before voting on it six days later. Got it, right-wingers?

Old argument: Of course members of Congress read the Obamacare bill before voting for it, you crazy right-wingers! New argument: Members of Congress never read the bills they vote for, you crazy right-wingers!
