'Seems immodest': Sneering Joyce Carol Oates ponders the 'subtext' of thanking God for an award

Actor Matthew McConaughey’s gratitude to God drew a tepid response from the Hollyweird audience at this year’s Academy Awards. But those without sneering contempt for faith applauded his “fearless” acceptance speech that “spoke volumes.”

“First off I want to thank God, because that’s who I look up to,” he said. “He’s graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.”

Author Joyce Carol Oates’ response? To deride McConaughey’s “immodest” gratitude. Oh, and to question the subtext of his expression of faith. Subtext.

Oates doesn’t have to appreciate McConaughey’s acceptance speech, but how exactly did she make it to 117 without understanding humility and gratitude?
