Actor Matthew McConaughey’s gratitude to God drew a tepid response from the Hollyweird audience at this year’s Academy Awards. But those without sneering contempt for faith applauded his “fearless” acceptance speech that “spoke volumes.”
“First off I want to thank God, because that’s who I look up to,” he said. “He’s graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.”
Author Joyce Carol Oates’ response? To deride McConaughey’s “immodest” gratitude. Oh, and to question the subtext of his expression of faith. Subtext.
@JoyceCarolOates or she/he is simply acknowledging a force greater than themselves at work in their lives. Which is an act of humility.

@JoyceCarolOates he sees something beyond himself…is this difficult to understand???

Oates doesn’t have to appreciate McConaughey’s acceptance speech, but how exactly did she make it to 117 without understanding humility and gratitude?
Victim card update:
"Twittered"–to be subjected to a barrage of quasi-indignant, slyly mischievous & often very (unintentionally?) funny words from strangers.
