Never let a tragedy go to waste, huh?
The Left is still trying to exploit Trayvon Martin’s death to advance its dangerous anti-gun, anti-self-defense agenda. The latest attempt is a Mother’s Day video from the Second Chance campaign that features Trayvon Martin’s grieving mom, Sybrina Fulton.
Second Chance is a campaign to “oppose reckless Shoot First laws.” It was launched after Trayvon Martin’s death by a coalition including the NAACP, the National Urban League, the National Action Network, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, Color of Change, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
In the video, Fulton calls on people to petition their state governments to reexamine Stand Your Ground laws. She says, “Just like me, 30,000 mothers lost their children this year to senseless gun violence.”
In trying to make sense of her son’s death, Fulton is spreading a shocking message handed to her by political groups that share an anti-freedom agenda. But not only is the message political, it’s utter bull crap.
The latest CDC data show there were 31,347 firearms-related deaths in 2009.
But 18,735—more than half—were suicides (PDF). Another 554 were “unintentional” deaths.
