'All the things are racist'! RNC chair spanked soundly for calling self-deportation idea 'racist'; Update: Priebus was misquoted, said 'it hurts us'

[Editor’s note: Two reporters and Reince Priebus now dispute that the RNC chair called self-deportation “racist.” Business Insider has issued a correction and now reports Priebus said, “It hurts us.” Please read the update at the end of this post. The original post remains below.]

If this Business Insider report is correct, here’s your daily dose of “leadership” from the Republican establishment:

In condemning Rep. Steve King’s incendiary comments on immigration, RNC chairman Reince Priebus swept in his party’s presidential nominee, saying that talk of “self-deportation” was “horrific” and even “racist.”

“Using the word ‘self-deportation’ — it’s a horrific comment to make,” Priebus said, in a forceful rebuke. “I don’t think it has anything to do with our party. When someone makes those comments, obviously, it’s racist.”

“Obviously”? Oh, come on.

Here’s an obviously racist idea:

Update:

And now a different story emerges. The RNC and two reporters say Priebus did not use the term “racist.”

So, Business Insider transcribed “hurts us” as “racist”?

Business Insider has added a correction to its story.

Correction, 12:26 p.m. ET: An original version of this story said that Reince Priebus referred to Mitt Romney’s comments as “racist.” He said it “hurts us.” Business Insider regrets the error.

While we’re glad Priebus didn’t call self-deportation “racist,” it appears no one is disputing that he called it “horrific.” And that’s still a big problem.

Update:

Brett LoGiurato, author of the Business Insider piece, has issued a mea culpa on Twitter:
