House committee chairman's comments on 'barriers' show a growing divide among Democrats over a wall

Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi who is now chairman of the House’s Homeland Security Committee, says his party is not ruling out supporting barriers.

This runs in stark contrast to the kind of language Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been using about a wall.

Nancy Pelosi: "The fact is, a wall is an immorality. It's not who we are as a nation." https://t.co/l6dDLDRRf0 pic.twitter.com/tq3DDjG0Gp

This illustrates what seems to be a growing divide in the Democratic Party when it comes to whether they will support a physical barrier or even a wall.

So, now that pressure is mounting on both political parties over the government shutdown, democrats seem to be changing their tune over the boarder wall https://t.co/Pb6NIJf619

I'm sensing a growing divide amongst Democrats, one side is willing talk about a possible compromise on a 'Border Barrier' the other is the 'Give No Ground/Give No Quarter' deathmatch with Trump group. The latter is louder and have Nancy Pelosi running scared she'll lose control https://t.co/EUiGA6x9g0

“A wall is an immorality” (Pelosi) is miles away from “I don’t think Democrats are opposed to any physical barriers” (Thompson).
