Republicans are strongly criticizing President Joe Biden for what has become of the U.S. southern border. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) characterizes the southern border as an “absolute catastrophe” since President Biden took office and notes that the highest ever number of illegal aliens entered the nation during the month of December.
Since President Biden took office, the southern border has been an absolute catastrophe.
Last month over 250,000 illegal aliens flooded into America – the highest number EVER.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) tweets a threefold response to the report that December’s number of illegal border crossings was the highest of any month during the Biden administration.
1. @JoeBiden should resign
2. Mayorkas should resign
3. We must secure our border https://t.co/wQy7ckTqer— Rick Scott (@ScottforFlorida) January 22, 2023
The number of recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in December was higher than any previous month of the current administration, and the numbers of recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in each month of the current administration are all higher than the numbers in each month of the previous administration.
According to statistics published by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there were more than 2.3 million recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in Fiscal Year 2022. The same chart shows that in FY 2021, there were more than 1.7 million recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border. In contrast, there were 458,088 recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in FY 2020. U.S. CPB reports show that there were 977,509 recorded encounters in FY 2019; there were 521,090 recorded encounters in FY 2018; and 415,517 in FY 2017.

The most recent illegal migrant data points describe a national security calamity and humanitarian emergency on the U.S. southern border. The manifold potential threats to the entire nation caused by a dismantled immigration system stemming from years of open borders policies should have created the political will to solve this issue long ago.
