We’ve been telling you about former New Yorker Karol Markowicz’s recent move to Florida and here’s an update on how the first day of *real” kindergarten went for her 6-year-old:
My 6yo was in 1st grade in NYC but the cut-off is different in FL and he's in K again, which makes me happy as I love that he will have a normal K experience. His first day was today and he came home very happy. A few minutes ago, his teacher called me to check in. (Cont)

Here’s the “OMG” moment of the thread:
Her: "He was great, really got into the rhythm of the class. And then we went to the rug…"
Me: "They go to the rug?!"
Her: "Yes, why?"
Me: "In NYC they try to keep the kids apart and he hasn't been on the rug…"
My 6yo listening: "Not since Pre-K"
Her: GASP.— Karol Markowicz (@karol) January 5, 2022
It was never just the masks:
I focus on masks but, again, masks are just one part of the equation. So much about childhood just got casually destroyed. This is wrong. We have to stop this.

And this has woken up other New Yorkers, too:
I didn't realize until now that my girl, 8, hasn't sat on a @NYCSchools rug for almost 2 years. Somewhat ironically, the science teacher just took away the class pet b/c children liked it too much. I think the teacher was pressured/ordered so I don't blame her.

What have we done to our kids?
My sister in law taught 1st grade last year- no rug, no extra furniture, books could not be shared. At my preK toys could not be shared with other classes unless they were sanitized and then sat for a few days, everyone had their own glue sticks and paintbrush.

That’s just heartbreaking:
This just made me cry.
This isn't right. F*ck these people.

And here’s hoping there are many, many more days for Karol and her family like this to come:
So so happy for you and your children. Happy, happy joy, joy!
