UPDATE:
The first reports out of the Dominican Republic said Ortiz was shot in the leg. It appears the wound is much more serious than that:
I just spoke to @dSoldevila who is at the clinic where David Ortiz is currently being treated. Dionisio said me that the attending doctor told him that David was shot in the lower back and the bullet went through and through; he’s currently in surgery.

We’ve had further updates this morning on David Ortiz’s condition. His father said last night he had no damage to any organs, but doctors had to continue working late into the night and parts of organs had to be removed/treated. Ortiz is currently in intensive care but stable.
