Two people have been killed and about a dozen wounded after a gunman took hostages at a supermarket in the south of France, French police said Friday, according to the Associated Press.
The gunman claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, local media reported.
The incident occurred at the Super U store in the town of Trèbes. La Dépêche du Midi, the local newspaper, reported that the store’s butcher and a customer were the victims.
French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe described the incident as a “serious situation.”
A man thought to be the same suspect shot and wounded a police officer earlier Friday in the nearby medieval walled town of Carcassonne — a 15 minute drive from Trèbes — as he jogged with small group of other officers, BFM-TV reported.
According to some reports, the gunman is demanding the release of Salah Abdeslam, the sole survivor of the Paris bombing:
