Dan Milbank gets utterly destroyed over claim 'there's no such thing as a Trump Democrat'

Dana Milbank claims in his latest Washington Post column that “there’s no such thing as a Trump Democrat.” Did he miss the last election or what?

Opinion: There’s no such thing as a Trump Democrat https://t.co/T0Di1UN7tI

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) August 5, 2017

He needs to get out more:

.@Milbank respectfully not true. Take a drive to Wisconsin Ohio Michigan PA Minnesota & actually listen to folks
Don't fly
No interstate https://t.co/OAWQg8qnDQ

Did he even look at any data?

May want to check President/Senate splits from upstate NY. https://t.co/nyvUwBDJSJ

And here’s Decision Desk HQ’s Jeff Blehar with the detailed fact-check:

This is empirically false and the "data" in this piece is partisan farce; were it true, there is no way Trump could have won PA/WI/MI. https://t.co/wCoy05XHRh

Here is a map comparing Trump against Ron Johnson in WI 2016. Trump ran ahead of RJ in Dem-leaning western WI: Trump/Feingold Dem votes. pic.twitter.com/8BzeRVfkNe

(ironically, RJ outperformed Trump, winning by 3% as opposed to his <1%. Why? because that red strip you seen EASTERN WI is so vote-rich)

Now here's Trump vs. Toomey in PA 2016. What do you notice when you look at this map, @Milbank? pic.twitter.com/5lmDnGZ2R5

— The Nats Won The World Series (@EsotericCD) August 5, 2017

Yes, what you see is DJT outperforming Toomey in entire 'Appalachian' swath that cuts diagonally across PA but excludes Philly+burbs.

But what's hugely, eye-poppingly notable about this map is Trump's overperformance in NE PA: Scranton, Wilkes-Barre etc. Heavy blue-collar D

Those people are working-class union Democrats who voted for Trump on the Presidential line and Katie McGinty (D) on the Senate line.

The question is going forward is not whether "Trump Democrats" exist — they do and they swung the election (esp. b/c they delivered PA)…

— The Nats Won The World Series (@EsotericCD) August 5, 2017

….The question, rather, is whether Trump can hold onto them in 2020, and/or how they will vote (or even if they will vote at all) in 2018.
