Chicago Police Superintendent calls out judges, Donald Trump in wake of Nykea Aldridge murder

Powerful words from Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on the need for judicial reform in the wake of the murder of Nykea Aldridge on Friday, allegedly by two convicted felons who were out on parole, one of who was on his daily break from his electronic ankle monitor.

Johnson specifically called out “judicial and policy partners” who are obviously not doing enough to keep career thugs off of the streets:

“This reprehensible act of violence is the example of why we need to change the way we treat habitual offenders in the city of Chicago. When will enough be enough? How often do we have to stand at a podium like this demanding from our judicial and policy partners some type of resolution?”

Convicted felons puts it mildly:

Derren Sorrells, of the 6000 block of South Indiana Ave, is a documented gang member and was on parole for motor vehicle theft and for escaping custody, police said.

He had a total of six felony arrests in his background and was on his daily break from an electronic monitoring bracelet at the time of Friday’s shooting, Johnson said Sunday.

Darwin Sorrells, of the 7500 block of South Wentworth Ave, was a co-conspirator in the crime, police said, and was also on parole for a gun charge. He was sentenced to six years in prison in January 2013 and released early in February 2016, according to police.

Johnson also called out GOP nominee Donald Trump over his tough talk on crime:

From NBC News:

“If you have a magic bullet to stop the violence anywhere, not just in Chicago, but in America, then please share it with us,” Johnson said when asked about Trump’s remarks. “We’d be glad to take that information and stop this violence.”
