Earlier today, former Obama hack David Axelrod tweeted to his supporters that Donald Trump would be “thrilled” if he came in “second or third” in New Hampshire, making it sound like Trump was lowering expectation ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Except, that’s not what Trump said.
First up, here’s what Axelrod wrote:
"If I came in 2d or 3d I'd be thrilled," @realDonaldTrump tells @DanaBashCNN. Burned by IA, he plays down NH expectations. #UnnaturalAct
— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) February 7, 2016
Now for what he really said. Axelrod left off the second half of the quote where Trump specifically tells CNN’s Dana Bash that he “wouldn’t be happy” finishing second:
.@realDonaldTrump tells @danabashcnn that he "wouldn't be happy" with 2nd place in NH primary: https://t.co/q3hao3fOyZ

Quote "I could say to u 'If I came in 2nd/3rd I'd be thrilled', ok, & that way we lower expectations. [But truth is…] I wouldn't be happy"

14 fools RT'd this tweet, which claims the exact OPPOSITE of what @RealDonaldTrump actually said to Dana Bash.https://t.co/r34UgX2aZb

@davidaxelrod @realDonaldTrump @DanaBashCNN liar liar liar liar and you wonder why people hate media. totally twisting what he said, disgust

I don’t think that’s quite accurate, @davidaxelrod. He said that in the context of, “I’m sure you’d like me to say…”
— Andre Plaut (@andreplaut) February 7, 2016
Axelrod later conceded his error by saying Trump should lower expectations:
Ok, Trumpsters. I concede I misread. @realDonaldTrump learned little from Iowa and ISN'T lowering expectations! https://t.co/PX5ea7HWVb
— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) February 7, 2016
Seems you first criticize him for allegedly lowering expectations and now criticize him for NOT doing so. #SMH https://t.co/1d0RFDZdQE
