Congratulations to the Duke Blue Devils who overcame a 9 point second-half deficit to defeat the Wisconsin Badgers in last night’s NCAA national championship game in Indianapolis, Ind.
Except the message of congratulations to Duke from Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri was anything but congratulatory. Check out her hot take on the number of Duke’s young and incredibly talented players who will probably opt for the NBA rather than return to college:
Congrats to Duke, but I was rooting for team who had stars that are actually going to college & not just doing semester tryout for NBA.

Oh, come on!
.@clairecmc who cares if they were? god forbid anyone make a buck

.@clairecmc abysmal opinion

@clairecmc Then complain to the NBA for not allowing kids to go from high school to the pros.
— Matt (@MattNowak1) April 7, 2015
@ParmB @clairecmc why wouldn't they go to the NBA? Why wouldn't anybody?
— Andy Ellis (@bmoreconnected) April 7, 2015
.@clairecmc hope an intern posted this for you.
— Stacy Kauffman (@SportsnWhatnot) April 7, 2015
@clairecmc @anamariecox unbelievably ridiculous comment
— Natalie_Page (@Natalie_Page) April 7, 2015
And does she even really know what she’s talking about?
@clairecmc You obviously know nothing about @Duke_MBB. Stick to politics. Two of their kids took exams during Final Four. #studentathletes
— Ed White (@edwhitemagic) April 7, 2015
@clairecmc 5 Duke players made the All ACC Academic team, 3 were freshmen. Quinn Cook is a Senior for Duke. SMH!
— Cheryl Carter-Ellis (@saponicheryl) April 7, 2015
What about Wisconsin underclassmen who want to leave college early? Anything to say about that, Senator?
@clairecmc @anamariecox looking forward to your retraction tweet when Dekker and Hayes leave college early for the nba in about a month.
— Joe Pavlovich, Jr. (@joepav) April 7, 2015
(Sam Dekker is a junior, Nigel Hayes a sophomore.) Or, what about overall graduation rates of the program?
.@clairecmc this is the team you wanted to win the game? http://t.co/mZ7GoajOtM pic.twitter.com/OTVytObyih

Over to you, Senator.

Ha! Yes, do this first.
McCaskill later tried to explain herself:
I see I have stirred things up. Sorry, but I'm sad about the one & done thing.I understand why it's happening, but I don't have to like it.
— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) April 7, 2015
To be clear folks, this isn't about the kids, this is about the system. This is about the NCAA/NBA.I don't blame the very talented athletes.
— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) April 7, 2015
The first tweet was entirely about the “kids” though, when she said she was cheering for Wisconsin over Duke:
@clairecmc So someone else must have made that tweet targeted at kids who play one year? The system isn't the athletes' fault.

@clairecmc if you think this tweet is not about the students then you are delusional pic.twitter.com/sogc6rxJdg
— Andy Ellis (@bmoreconnected) April 7, 2015
.@clairecmc but you did, though
— Tim Baffoe (@TimBaffoe) April 7, 2015
.@clairecmc not now that people pointed out how messed up your hot take was
— Andy Ellis (@bmoreconnected) April 7, 2015
@clairecmc you clearly blamed them #backpedaling
— Your reign on the top was short like leprechauns (@LeutrimRexhaj) April 7, 2015
@clairecmc just to be clear, this is clearly a lie
— AnthonyM0708 (@AnthonyM0708) April 7, 2015
Pretty much.
